Study of Proverbs chapter 9
An invitation to Wisdom’s Banquet
Wisdom sends out preachers of the gospel, all over the world, with a message that promises life, understanding, a fulfillment of all that is lacking. What is most often the response?
The words of verse 7:
He who reproves a scorner gets to himself shame; and he who rebukes a wicked man gets himself a blot
And verse 8:
Reprove not a scorner lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man and he will love you.
Now of course common sense is needed: this does not mean we should go around criticizing people to determine who they are by their reaction. This verse is really talking about how people react to righteous teaching, their reaction to it reveals whether a person is wise or is a wicked scorner.
A person who is already wise will improve, becoming wiser, they will be teachable, and will learn from their mistakes. A wicked scorner is unteachable, never learns from mistakes, has no desire for righteousness. As a result, they will get worse and worse.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
